UC Santa Barbara Undergraduate Researchers Will Present Their Discoveries

Undergraduate researchers at UC Santa Barbara will present their discoveries and creative accomplishments at the annual Undergraduate Research Colloquium on Thursday, May 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Corwin Pavilion.

The event is free and open to the public.

The student researchers will be available to discuss their work.

This year's event will feature 129 poster presentations that showcase the work of undergraduate scholars across the academic disciplines.

In their research, students address subjects ranging from global amphibian decline, to Facebook's influence on sexual identity, to the conversion of waste heat to electricity, to young black women in Los Angeles gangs.

Projects in the fine arts are also well-represented, including a dance performance that explores the notion of family, and "Over and Out," a romantic comedy focusing on the effects of technology on human relations.

"Undergraduate participation in the research and creative mission of UCSB is a hallmark of our undergraduates' educational experience," said Dawn Holmes, senior associate dean of undergraduate education in the College of Letters and Science.

"Building upon their classroom learning, the students presenting their work at the colloquium have participated in a challenging and exciting endeavor.

Working with greater independence than in traditional classes, they have assisted in the creation of new knowledge.

In many ways, they represent the epitome of how a major research university ought to educate students."

More than half of all UCSB undergraduates are now involved in original research with graduate students and faculty members.

Students compete for grant funding to support their mentored research each year.

Research, conducted under the supervision of professors who are eminent in their fields, fosters critical thinking skills, and helps prepare students for future careers and advanced study.
