Bren Building Reopens After Collapse of Ceiling

The building housing the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC Santa Barbara reopened Wednesday morning following the weekend collapse of the ceiling in a lobby area outside an exterior elevator.

Faculty, staff, and students were allowed to re-enter the building, which had been closed Monday and Tuesday. Campus officials closed the building after a section of the suspended ceiling, estimated to be 20 feet x 25 feet and 4,000 pounds, came down mid-afternoon Saturday. There were no injuries. Those who were in the Bren building Saturday afternoon were evacuated safely.

Classes that had been moved to other locations on Tuesday resumed at the Bren building on Wednesday.

In a precautionary move, UCSB officials have ordered the removal of all suspended ceilings in the other elevator lobbies built in a similar fashion in the Bren building.
