UCSB Appoints Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services

The University of California, Santa Barbara has announced the appointment of Donna J. Carpenter as vice chancellor for administrative services.

Carpenter has been employed in the UC system for 33 years and has been on the UC Santa Barbara campus since 1994. She was UCSB's campus controller and director of accounting services until August 2004, when she was appointed acting vice chancellor for administrative services. Her appointment as vice chancellor is the result of a national search.

"I am delighted to announce this appointment," said UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang. "During Donna's service as acting vice chancellor, I have had the opportunity to work closely with her and to benefit from her wise counsel, her creative approach to challenges, and her skill in bringing people together. She has been an exemplary leader on our campus. I admire and appreciate her integrity, her devotion to our university, and her shared vision for the future of this campus. The UCSB community is very pleased and proud to have Donna as our vice chancellor for administrative services."

The appointment and a salary of $185,000 were approved by the Regents of the University of California at their meeting in San Francisco on Thursday, May 18.

A resident of Solvang, Carpenter is a graduate of Cal Poly, Pomona. She also earned an M.B.A. from the University of LaVerne. She served on the administrative staff at UC Riverside for 21 years before coming to UC Santa Barbara 12 years ago.

"I am excited about serving UC Santa Barbara as vice chancellor for administrative services," said Carpenter.

"While serving in this position on an interim basis, I have come to know the campus in new and different ways, and to work collaboratively and extensively with our faculty, staff, and students. I've greatly enjoyed this opportunity, and I look forward to drawing upon the knowledge and experience I've acquired to help UC Santa Barbara manage the challenges faced by a large and complex institution such as this."

The Division of Administrative Services encompasses all of the central administrative departments for the campus: Accounting Services and Controls, Audit and Advisory Services, Business Services, Campus Design and Facilities, Environmental Health and Safety, Housing and Residential Services, Human Resources, Information Systems and Computing, the Police Department, and the University Center and Events Center.
