Two UCSB Students Honored for Best Dissertations

Two UC Santa Barbara doctoral candidates whose dissertations were chosen as the year's best by the faculty's Graduate Council are each receiving a plaque and a cash award of $1,000.

This year's Winifred and Louis Lancaster Dissertation Award has been given to Aaron Hernday, who recently completed his doctoral degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, and Thomas Sizgorich, who has accepted an assistant professor position in ancient history at the University of New Mexico.

The dissertation awards are named in memory of two community leaders who, during their lives, contributed generously to UCSB.

They were founding members of the UCSB Affiliates and the Chancellor's Council. For half a century, the couple supported scholarships, fellowships, and the study of international and comparative politics.
