ISLA VISTA PLAN COMPETITION FIELD NARROWED TO FIVE

Five finalists in the Isla Vista Revitalization Urban Design Competition will be announced at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12 at UCSB's Embarcadero Hall, 935 Embarcadero del Norte in Isla Vista.

The five were chosen from a worldwide field of 29 entries and each will receive a $10,000 honorarium to support second-stage plan refinements.

The winner, who will be announced in February, will receive an additional $10,000 and then be asked to negotiate a contract to turn its entry into a long-range master plan for the community.

The contest -- sponsored by UCSB, the County of Santa Barbara and the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District -- is being held to come up with a vision of Isla Vista that will provide affordable housing to residents of all income levels while making the community livable, safe and enjoyable.

The competition jury is a panel of of five community representatives and five California planning and design professionals.

Drawings submitted with the 29 entries will be on display at Embarcadero Hall through Nov. 15.

Drawings and support material for the five finalists will be displayed at the University Center from Nov. 16 through December.
