Cloudy skies couldn’t dampen the competitive spirit of the 48 players who turned out for Thursday’s United Way Bean Bag Toss Tournament. Likewise, the weather had little effect on the myriad spectators who cheered from the sidelines. But at the end of five single-elimination rounds, Like Father Like Son — the team made up of the Gevirtz School’s Bob and Sam Rifkin — was the winner. Taking second place were Gary Lawrence and Hugo Rios of United UCen.

With names like The Enforcers, Mother Shuckers, PB&J and The Philosobros, 24 teams from departments across campus participated in the fundraiser, with all proceeds supporting United Way. The campus’s annual campaign continues through March 8, with the theme “United for Education.” For over 60 years, UC Santa Barbara has partnered with United Way to raise resources and mobilize volunteers to serve those most at risk in the local community. Last year the campus raised $107, 407; this year’s goal is $110,000.

As the campaign’s final fundraiser, The Club & Guest House will donate 10 percent of all lunch proceeds from March 4-8 to United Way.
