Santa Barbara Partners in Education Elects Officers

A new slate of officers has been elected to lead the board of directors of Santa Barbara Partners in Education, a non-profit organization working in concert with the County Education Office to promote excellence in area schools and the development of outstanding graduates.

The organization's partners come from business, industry, government, elementary and secondary schools, community colleges, and four-year colleges. Founded in 1977, the organization was formerly known as the Santa Barbara Industry Education Council.

Among other things, Partners in Education works to support the accomplishments of young people, foster communication and other links between area schools and business and industry, and enhance career education programs in the schools. The organization's best-known program is Computers for Families, which facilitates Internet-based instruction in elementary-school classrooms by providing computers and training to low-income families. More than 4,000 computers have been distributed to such families since the program began six years ago.

The new officers of Santa Barbara Partners in Education for the 2003-04 year are:

President: John M. Wiemann, vice chancellor for institutional advancement, UC Santa Barbara

Vice President: Julie McGovern, vice president and general manager, Cox Communications Inc.

Secretary/Treasurer: John Romo, President, Santa Barbara City College

Past President: Mark Sylvester, chief executive officer, mixed grill, a design firm specializing in information visualization
