UCSB WELCOMES PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

High school and college transfer students who have been invited to attend the University of California, Santa Barbara and others who may be shopping around for a college will converge on campus from April 5 to 10 for Spring Insight.About 6,000 people are expected to take part in the annual open house this year. Last year's attendance drew more than 3,000 visitors.

The week-long event --- with general programs beginning at 9 a.m. and running all day at the Corwin Pavilion --- allows students to learn more about the university's academic offerings, admission requirements, housing and financial aid. They will tour the campus, its facilities and residence halls, and nearby Isla Vista.

Students may, also, sit in on selected classes. Unlike other college and university open houses, UCSB faculty open their classrooms to visitors, said Mel Gregory, director of Relations with Schools & Early Academic Outreach. Their willingness to allow spectators enhances the annual event and the longtime practice is catching on at other campuses.

For the first time this year, under-represented students may attend a casual reception with advocates and university staff people at 2 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Multicultural Center on campus.

This will give students additional personal contact with people who can decipher further the intricacies of UCSB's operations, Gregory said.

Several other receptions also will take place for invited-only guests. They include a gathering for Regents scholars and other honor students who did not attend a regional reception---the yearly f?tes hosted by UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang for prospective high-achieving college freshmen.

Reservations are not required for Spring Insight. For more information, call the Office of Relations with Schools at (805) 893-2485.
