Lights Out

Planned outage by Southern California Edison will affect UCSB and other large customers in the Goleta area

Having identified several necessary projects to increase reliability and reduce the risk of unplanned outages, Southern California Edison (SCE) has scheduled a power outage to make improvements to their system.

As a result, the entire UC Santa Barbara main campus, including Santa Catalina Residence Hall, will be without power from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 3. Some UCSB websites also may be down during each four-hour outage.  Individual building emergency power will continue to provide electrical service to those systems that are connected to the emergency power system. Facilities Management will have staff on campus prior to, during, and after the outages to ensure building emergency generators are operational and building systems are returned to normal operation.

In preparation for the power outage, SCE requests that any sensitive equipment/systems that are not on emergency power be systematically shut down prior to the outages to minimize any potential damage or other negative impact. Edison also suggests turning off all non-essential equipment, including computers, copiers, fax machines, coffee makers, microwave ovens and other electrical devices and appliances.

The upcoming outage is the second of two that were scheduled by SCE. The first took place from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 29.
