UC Santa Barbara Offers Admission to 23,875 for Fall 2012

UC Santa Barbara has offered a place in its fall 2012 entering class to a total of 23,875 high school seniors. The prospective UCSB freshmen were selected from a total of 54,831 freshman applicants –– the largest applicant pool in UCSB history. The campus expects its fall 2012 entering freshman class to number about 4,400.

Both the academic qualifications and the diversity of the applicant class accepted by UCSB continue to be at very high levels:

· The average high school grade point average of applicants admitted is 4.07.

· The average total score achieved by applicants admitted by UCSB on the required SATR Test is 1923 out of a possible 2400.

· Of all applicants admitted, 23.6 percent identify themselves as members of a

racial or ethnic minority group. (Individual applicants to UC are not identified to the campuses by race or ethnicity until after admission decisions are made.)

Admission to UC Santa Barbara continues to be competitive. This year, 44

percent were offered a place in next fall's entering class.

All nine of the UC undergraduate campuses are releasing admissions statistics today. The UC Office of the President is posting systemwide statistics on its Web site here.

Applications from 13,670 students seeking to transfer to UC Santa Barbara are still under review, with decisions to be announced by the end of April. The number of transfer applications decreased this year by 618, or 4.3 percent. All UC undergraduate campuses except Merced saw a decrease in transfer applications.

UCSB acceptance letters were sent in mid-March, and applicants could check their admission status via a protected Web site. Freshman applicants who have been accepted by any UC campus have until May 1 to submit a Statement of Intent to Register.

Led by Chancellor Henry T. Yang, UCSB officials, faculty, and staff members have been working diligently to ensure that the class enrolled this fall is the campus's most talented and diverse ever. In March, Yang served as the host of two well-attended California receptions, one in Los Angeles and one in San Jose, for high-achieving applicants. At these events, volunteers from the UCSB campus –– faculty and staff members, as well as alumni and students –– met with applicants and their family members to answer questions about UCSB academic programs, student life, financial aid, and other topics. Receptions were also hosted at several locations outside of California.

The UC system received a record 160,939 applications for fall 2012 –– 126,455 from freshman applicants and 34,640 from transfer applicants. All nine undergraduate campuses experienced increases in freshman applicants.

The 2012 freshman enrollment target of 4,375 is slightly higher than last year's target of 3,900. The larger target is related to an increased graduation rate for UCSB. For the same reason, the enrollment target of 1,650 new transfer students is also a bit higher than last year's, which stood at 1,500.

Of all applicants admitted, 79.5 percent, or 18,930, are California residents. Among those California students, members of underrepresented minority groups (African-American, American Indian, and Chicano and Latino students) totaled 5,187 or 27.4 percent, down slightly from 27.7 percent last year.

Of the total number of admitted applicants, 2,037, or 9 percent, are international non-resident students. With the exception of UC Berkeley, the number of international non-resident admitted applicants has increased at every undergraduate UC campus.

"UCSB has admitted an extraordinarily talented freshman class," said Christine Van Gieson, UCSB's admissions director. "In addition to strong academic credentials, students also present a wide range of accomplishments outside of the classroom."
