UCSB Computer Scientist Receives Fulbright Award to Conduct Research in Finland

Matthew Turk, a professor of computer science and of media arts and technology at UC Santa Barbara, has been awarded a Fulbright-Nokia Distinguished Chair in Information and Communications Technologies. The Fulbright Distinguished Chair position, which is among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program, will enable him to conduct research in Finland during the 2011-12 academic year.

Turk will work with colleagues at the University of Oulu and the University of Tampere on research in vision-based interaction in mobile environments. "I have significant overlap of research interests with the computer vision group in Oulu, and the human-computer interaction group at Tampere," he said. "I expect my visits –– for one month in 2011 and two months in 2012 –– to generate new ideas and collaborative projects."

Turk also will engage with researchers from Nokia, the mobile communications company headquartered in Finland, and will teach and lecture at both universities.

The Fulbright Program, America's flagship international educational exchange program, is sponsored by the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Since its establishment in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided approximately 286,500 people from the United States and around the world with the opportunity to observe each others' political, economic, educational, and cultural institutions, to exchange ideas, and to embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world's inhabitants. The program operates in over 155 countries.

Turk is one of approximately 1,100 faculty and professionals from the United States who will travel abroad through the Fulbright Scholar Program in 2011-12. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.
