Graduating Seniors to Receive UCSB's Top Awards

Three of UC Santa Barbara's most outstanding graduating seniors have been selected to receive the highest awards presented to students at commencement ceremonies on June 17 and 18.

Juan Carlos Ibarra of Davis, an honors student majoring in history with an emphasis in public policy, will receive the Thomas More Storke Award for Excellence, UCSB's highest student honor.

Given annually to a graduating senior who has demonstrated "outstanding scholarship and extraordinary service to the university, its students and the community," the award's criteria include "courage, persistence, and achievement."

Alisha Anne Dahlstrom of Auburn, Michigan, an honors student with a double major in environmental studies and marine biology, will be presented with the Jeremy D. Friedman Memorial Award, given annually to a graduating senior who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and superior scholarship, and who has "contributed significantly to the quality of undergraduate life on campus."

Crister De Leon of San Rafael, who will be graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre and a bachelor of arts in Spanish, will receive the Alyce Marita Whitted Memorial Award, which is presented annually to a graduating senior who has "demonstrated endurance, persistence and courage in the face of extraordinary challenges while in pursuit of an academic degree."
