Six UCSB Senior Women Awarded Surprise Cash Academic Prizes

Six high-achieving graduating senior women at UC Santa Barbara have been notified that they will receive this year's City Club Awards and share a total of $47,200 in prize money.

The annual cash awards are presented to UCSB's top six graduating women in the social sciences, based on their upper division grades,

and usually come as a complete surprise to the recipients.

The City Club Awards were created by a now defunct Santa Barbara women's club to honor women "for a job well done," according to Lura Dolas, a former member of the club.

The six winners, the amount of their award, their majors, and hometowns:

  • Irene Altman, $11,000 -- Global Studies and Business Economics, Campbell

  • Megan Fowler, $8,500 -- Anthropology and History, Davis

  • Meredith Perry, $7,500 -- Global Studies, Fresno

  • Carrie Awalt, $7,000 -- Communication and Sociology, Los Gatos

  • Lauren Rudser, $6,500 -- Anthropology, Van Nuys

  • Shannon Clark, $6,000 -- Communication, Laguna Niguel

The City Club of Santa Barbara was established in the 1930s by and for women who were interested in the political process.

It was disbanded in 1978 and the proceeds from the sale of its clubhouse were used to establish the awards at UCSB.
