UCSB To Offer Summer Youth Leadership & Advocacy Institute

This summer UC Santa Barbara will host a Youth Leadership and Advocacy Institute for high school juniors and seniors that is designed to promote greater understanding of the issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) teenagers.

The weeklong program, which will be held July 16-22, is open to all high school students at no cost.

It will include daily workshops on a variety of topics, including high school gay-straight alliances, LGBT and the media, homosexuality and religion, "coming out," homophobia and heterosexism, and community resources.

Participants will stay in a UCSB residence hall.

Meals, transportation, and supplies will be provided.

The application deadline is May 15.

A $100 refundable deposit is required to reserve space.

The deposit will be returned after completion of the institute.

Students with limited financial means are encouraged to apply.

Enrollment will be limited to 42 students.
