New UCSB Faculty Member Receives Research Award

Jeffrey Bode, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has received a Camille Dreyfus New Faculty Award for 2003. He was chosen as one of 15 out of 72 candidates across the nation.

The Camille and Henry Dreyfus New Faculty Awards Program, established in 1979, provides funding for new faculty members at the start of their research and teaching activities. The foundation notes that while most talented young faculty apply for and are able to secure external research support, such support does not ordinarily become available before the end of the first year of appointment. Thus, a key feature of the award is an unrestricted research grant of $40,000 awarded in September of the year in which the new faculty member formally begins the first-year appointment. In general, 15 awards are made each year.

Bode began his graduate studies in organic chemistry at the California Institute of Technology in 1996. In 1998, he moved with his research advisor, Erick M. Carreira, to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, Switzerland, where he completed his doctorate in 2001. He joined UCSB's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in 2003 following a two-year postdoctoral fellowship with Keisuke Suzuki, professor at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan.
