The land that is now the Sedgwick Reserve was owned by philanthropist and sculptor Francis "Duke" Sedgwick and his wife, Alice, who gave a large portion of the property to the university as part of their legacy.

UC maintains significant examples of California's diverse aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems for teaching, research, and public service. UCSB oversees seven such sites, including the Sedgwick Reserve.
