Thomas Scheff, emeritus professor of sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has been chosen to give the 2002 Eilert Sundt lecture Friday, Oct. 25, at the University of Oslo in Norway.

Each year, the University of Oslo chooses an internationally prominent sociologist to give the lecture, named after Sundt, a pioneer in Norwegian sociology and founder of the university's psychology department.

Scheff, an expert on the sociology of emotions, will speak on "Emotions and Politics."

His talk will draw on his research on male emotions and violence as well as his thoughts on the role of shame and alienation in destructive conflict.

His 1994 book, "Bloody Revenge," examined the roles that rage and shame play in inter-group conflicts and resulted in an invitation to lecture in Northern Ireland to further the pursuit of peace there.

He is a past chairman of the Sociology of Emotions section of the American Sociological Association and a recipient of the Society for Applied Sociology's Award for Sociological Practice.

In August, the Society for the Study of Social Problems recognized Scheff's life contributions to sociology, social action and social justice by awarding him the 2002 Lee Founders Award at its annual meeting in Chicago.

Scheff joined the faculty at UCSB in 1963 and retired in 1991.
