Reacting to the creation of cloned human embryos in a Massachusetts laboratory last year, the Bush administration announced its opposition to all forms of human cloning.
But many scientists say that a total ban will unnecessarily handicap legitimate American scientific research.
David Kohl, a professor of biology at UC Santa Barbara, will review the debate in "Cloning and Stem Cells: Why All the Fuss," a UCSB Affiliates Town Forum lecture Tuesday, April 23.
The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in the First Presbyterian Church, 21 East Constance Ave. in Santa Barbara.
Tickets are $5 for Affiliates and Chancellor's Council members and $8 for the general public. Advance registration is required and can be made by calling the UCSB Office of Community Relations at 893-4388.
Kohl, who joined the UCSB Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology in 1969, earned a Ph.D. in developmental biology at the State University of New York at Buffalo and spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Scotland.
His talk will provide an elementary overview of cloning and stem cell research as well as the ethical, religious and political controversies they have provoked.
