UCSB OFFERS ACADEMIC COMPETITION FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

UC Santa Barbara's College of Creative Studies invites California high school students to enter the UCSB Undergraduate Fellowship and Prize Competition. More than 6,000 students are expected to compete for recognition, cash prizes, and undergraduate fellowships sponsored by the college.

Students may take examinations in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics at their high school campuses or submit original work in art, literature, or music composition.

Top winners will be eligible for UCSB Undergraduate Fellowships, which provide financial support of $5,000 for one year to attend UCSB beginning Fall 2000.

Interested students should notify their high school counselors. Counselors and teachers may contact College of Creative Studies at (805) 893-4146. The deadline for entry is Oct. 1, 1999.

The College of Creative Studies (CCS), the campus' smallest college, was established in the 1967-68 academic year to give talented, self-directed students an opportunity for independent study with working artists, scientists, critics, and scholars, such as R. Buckminster Fuller and New York City Ballet dancer Jacques d'Amboise. CCS alumni include Grammy award winner David Holt, "Live Nude Girls" filmmaker Julianna Lavin, and Alexei Filippenko, who is best known for his discovery that many galaxies, including our own, evolved from quasars and for finding a new type of exploding star, an oxygen-rich nova.
