FORMER UCSB LIBRARIAN LEADS LIBRARY GROUP

Olga Ignon, a retired UCSB assistant librarian, has been elected chair of the Friends of the UCSB Library, a community support group dedicated to strengthening the relationship between UCSB and the Santa Barbara community, raising money to bolster the library's services and building the library's Special Collections.

Ignon serves one year, which began in October. Other officers include David Myrick, 1st vice chair, Stephen A. Acronico, 2nd vice chair, Florence Sanchez, secretary, Barbara Aue, treasurer, and Toni Schultheis, corresponding secretary. Robert Bason is immediate past president.

During her term, the new chairwoman hopes to raise the university library's profile outside the campus community. Links between libraries as well as between the libaries and communities they serve have been one of her major interests, Ignon said.

Before retiring, Ignon was a gifts and exchange librarian at UCLA and an assistant university librarian for collection development at UCSB from 1975 to 1987. For many years, she was librarian for Thacher School in Ojai and the Los Angeles County Law Library. Also, she has chaired the Friends of the Santa Barbara Public Library board.

The Davidson Library is one of the largest academic libraries in the University of California system with a book collection exceeding 2.5 million volumes. It has the largest compilation of satellite images in the Map and Imagery Laboratory; the most extensive archive west of the Mississippi on the Civil War in its Wyles Collection; one of the country's top three collections of information on Chicano culture in the Colección Tloque Nahauque and one of the four largest collections of wax cylinder recordings in the nation.
