UCSB ANTHROPOLOGIST WINS BOOK PRIZE

Francesca Bray, chair of UCSB's Department of Anthropology, has been honored for her book Technology and Gender: Fabrics of Power in Late Imperial China by the Society of the History of Technology (SHOT).

Bray was awarded the Dexter Prize, given for the most outstanding book published in the history of technology in 1996 through 1998, at the annual meeting of SHOT in Detroit in October.

A $2,000 cash award accompanied the prize.

In Technology and Gender (University of California Press, 1997), Bray examines eight centuries (1000-1800) of Chinese domestic life, intertwining the history of Chinese technology with the history of Chinese women.

"For anyone interested in the history of everyday life or the history of material culture, this is the book on China to read," said Peter Burke, professor of cultural history at the University of Cambridge.
