UCSB RELEASES ENROLLMENT FIGURES

The academic quality of the incoming freshman class continues to improve at UCSB.

The average freshman in the class of 2003 has a high school GPA of 3.69, up slightly over last year, and a combined SAT score of 1179, up 16 points over last fall.

Overall campus undergraduate enrollment of underrepresented minority students including Native Americans, African Americans, Chicanos, and Latinos for the current quarter is 3,025 as compared to 2,932 during the same quarter last year.

For the 1999-2000 academic year, UCSB expects a three-quarter average on-campus enrollment of 19,208 students.

That will keep the campus 556 students below its Long Range Development Plan Enrollment cap ceiling, which calls for an on-campus student body of no more that 19,764 this academic year.

Fall on-campus enrollment is 19,700 students.

An additional 356 students are studying in foreign countries in UC's Education Abroad Program,

at the UCSB Ventura Center, and at the UC Washington, D.C. program.

"We are constantly making efforts to improve the quality and diversity of our student body.

The efforts are multifaceted including outreach toschools, recruitment of both freshman and transfer students, and retention",said Admissions Director William Villa.

"Although we see an improvement in the academic ability of our incoming freshman, and our underrepresented minority student enrollment has increased slightly, we are continuing to intensify our efforts to meet our goals of excellence and diversity."
