RECEPTION SPOTLIGHTS MUSIC DEPARTMENT AND AFFILIATES

The UCSB Music Affiliates and the Department of Music will gather on Monday, Oct. 18, to allow faculty to meet members of the community support group and discuss ways that the group can better serve the department, its students and the Santa Barbara community.

The private mixer hosted by the Music Affiliates will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Centennial House on campus.

Led this year by Santa Barbara resident Jack Stoltz, the Music Affiliates is dedicated to strengthening the relationship between UCSB and the greater Santa Barbara community, showcasing music students and faculty, and raising money for scholarships.

Stoltz began his two-year term this academic year. He hopes to strengthen the affiliates' endowment fund to increase the number of graduate student scholarships.

"As tuition costs increase and federal and state monies decrease, the need for financial assistance at every level becomes more critical each year," Stoltz said.

Other new officers include Phillip Walker, vice president, Margaret Hamister, secretary, and Tom Parent, treasurer. T. Arthur Kvaas is immediate past president. In addition, the Music Affiliates welcomed several new members to the 25-member board. They are Richard Brotherton, Joan Freeman and Phyllis Nordstrom.

More than 300 affiliates members donate to the group's scholarship fund. Their generosity has allowed the Music Affiliates to give more than $150,000 in scholarships to UCSB students since 1984.

For additional information, the Music Affiliates can be reached through the university's Community Relations Office, 893-4388.
