PROMISING MEXICAN SOPRANO TO SING AT UCSB

The arias of Puccini will mix with classic Mexican compositions Monday, Oct. 11 when up-and-coming Mexican soprano Martha Juliana Ayech Rodriguez visits the University of California, Santa Barbara's Geiringer Hall

for a 7 p.m. performance.

Ayech, a graduate student at Mexico's University of Queretaro and a past participant in international opera competitions, was a finalist in the prestigious 1998 Vincenzo Bellini competition in Italy.

Among the Mexican favorites chosen for her program are "Son de la Negra"

by S. Vargas; "Jurame," "Te Quiero Dijiste," "Asi," and "Ya No Me Quires" by Maria Grever; "Solamente Una Vez" and "Granada" by Agustin Lara; "Amapola" by A.M. LaCalle; "Sabor a Mi" by Alvara Carrillo and "Mexico Lindo" by Jesus Monge. She will be accompanied by pianist Andrew Harley.

Her visit is being made possible by the UCSB/University of Queretaro Academic Exchange Program with support from the UCSB Department of Chicano Studies, the Center for Chicano Studies and the Department of Music.

The public is invited and admission is free.
