UC'S BUDDING RESEARCHERS COMPETE FOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Tuesday, April 20, 1999 - 17:00
Santa Barbara, CA

More than 100 students, faculty, and staff from eight UC campuses will meet at La Casa de Maria Retreat Center in Santa Barbara for a CAMP (California Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Engineering and Mathematics) symposium. The 55 students, including five from UCSB, will present their research and compete for prizes on Saturday, April 24.

Students will present their findings on everything from testing materials used to protect space craft entering a planet's atmosphere to studying the red-tailed hawk population on Santa Cruz Island off the coast of California.

Chancellor Henry T. Yang will give a formal welcome to begin the day and the symposium will culminate in an awards program with special recognition by faculty and peers for the best presentations. The keynote address will be presented by UCSB marine biologist Kathy Foltz.

CAMP offers students professional development and promotes mentored research as a platform for graduate school. Students honing their public speaking skills at the symposium will have further opportunities to present their work at national conferences. CAMP is one of 27 alliances supported by the National Science Foundation. Now in its eighth year of a 10-year cooperative agreement with NSF, CAMP promotes effective synergy by collaborating with affiliated programs.
