UC SANTA BARBARA GRADUATES CLASS OF 1998

The University of California, Santa Barbara will hold seven separate

commencement ceremonies for the campus's three colleges on June 7, 13, and 14 with approximately 3,600 degree candidates participating.

Commencement exercises are organized by college, level of degree, and field of study to permit each degree candidate to be individually recognized. Chancellor Henry T. Yang will shake hands with each student from the Graduate Division, the College of Letters and Science, the College of Engineering, and the the College of Creative Studies.

The College of Creative Studies, celebrating its 30th anniversary June 5-7, will lead off with its ceremony on Sunday, June 7, at 1 p.m. in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall.

Tu Thach Huynh, this year's recipient of the Thomas More Storke Award---the highest honor bestowed on a graduating senior at UCSB---and other outstanding students will receive their awards in a ceremony Friday, June 12, at 3:30 p.m. in the University Center's Corwin Pavilion.

Guest speakers for the June 13-14 ceremonies on the Faculty Club Green are: Saturday, June 13, 9 a.m.: John J. Wilczak, founder and former chairman of the board of MetaCreations Corp., will present this year's address for the College of Letters and Science's Division of Mathematical, Life, and Physical Sciences. MetaCreations Corp. in Carpinteria was formed in May 1997 as a result of a merger of MetaTools and Fractal Design Corp. Wilczak founded MetaTools in 1987, an imaging and multimedia technology company.

Saturday, June 13, at 1 p.m.: Martha Krebs, director of the Office of Energy Research (OER) in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), will present this year's College of Engineering address. Krebs manages one of the largest sponsors of basic research in the federal government. With an annual budget of approximately $2.5 billion, the OER funds DOE programs in basic energy sciences, high energy and nuclear physics, biological and environmental research, fusion energy sciences, computational and technology research, and science education.

Saturday, June 13, at 4 p.m.: Rep. Lois Capps will present this year's address during the College of Letters and Science's Division of Social Sciences commencement for those graduating in the fields of anthropology, business economics, communication, economics, and economics-mathematics. Capps was elected to represent the 22nd District following the death of her husband Rep. Walter H. Capps, a former chair of the religious studies department at UCSB. Like her husband, Capps, who worked as a nurse for the S.B. School District for 20 years, is committed to public service that focuses on helping people improve their everyday lives.

Sunday, June 14, at 9 a.m.:

Anita Roddick, founder and CEO of The Body Shop, will address the College of Letters and Science's Division of Social Sciences commencement for those graduating in the fields of Asian American studies, Black studies, Chicano studies, environmental studies, interdisciplinary studies, law and society, liberal studies, political science, sociology and women's studies. Roddick, who was inspired by the women she encountered in her world travels, incorporated their traditional methods for hair and skin care in her products. In 1997, she was recognized by the United Nations' Environment Program as one of 25 female leaders to have made outstanding contributions to the environment.

Sunday, June 14, at 1 p.m.: Journalist Ann Louise Bardach, an investigative reporter for the New York Times and on staff with Vanity Fair, will address graduates from the College of Letters and Science's Division of Humanities and Fine Arts. Bardach received the 1995 PEN West award for an article in Vanity Fair titled "Mexico's Poet Rebel."

Sunday, June 14, at 4 p.m.:

Donna Lee Shirley, manager of the Mars Exploration Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., will present this year's final commencement address to the Graduate Division. Since the highly successful Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Pathfinder missions in 1996, the Mars Exploration Program has sent orbiters and landers to Mars and will continue to fly two missions to Mars at every opportunity through at least 2005. Prior to becoming manager of the program, Shirley managed the team building Sojourner, the Microrover, which landed on the surface of Mars on July 4, 1997. Alternative Graduation in Isla Vista's Anisq' Oyo' Park. The students will receive diplomas created by their chosen presenters, who can be anyone from little sisters to faculty mentors.

Saturday, June 13, at noon: Chicano Graduation Celebration in Harder Stadium.

Saturday, June 13, at noon: Black Graduation Celebration in Campbell Hall.
