S.B. COUNTY YOUTHS TO TEST THEIR ROCKET DESIGN SKILLS

Approximately 200 pre-college participants of the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program in Santa Barbara County will test their craftsmanship and design skills in a rocketry competition at Vandenberg Air Force Base on Saturday, May 30.

The sixth annual MESA Rocket Launch competition, sponsored by Lockheed-Martin and the U.S. Air Force, begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m.

Lockheed-Martin personnel will serve as judges, operate the launch-pads, and provide participants with a barbecue lunch.

"This activity allows many of these talented young scholars an opportunity to build and test a launch mechanism," says Ray Norton, director of UC Santa Barbara's MESA Center. "More importantly, this provides an excellent vehicle for MESA students---many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds---the opportunity to interact with engineers from Lockheed-Martin and members of the U.S. Air Force."

The event is not open to the public. For further information, call 805-893-4026.
