Gevirtz Research Center NEW YORK TIMES FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTES $30,000 TO UCSB

The Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara has received a $30,000 gift from The New York Times Company Foundation, Inc. in support of the Gevirtz Research Center Committed to Outreach for Educational Excellence.

"The Gevirtz Research Center gratefully appreciates the donation from The New York Times Foundation," said Vishna Herrity, director of the center.

"The funds will be used to support the development of innovative educational programs, which are research based and will ultimately serve as models for educators across the nation."

The Gevirtz center was created in 1996 to foster research in aspects of public elementary school education to improve student academic achievement and student access to higher education.

The initial focus of the Gevirtz Research Center a partnership between UCSB, the Santa Barbara School District and the private sector -- is to research, develop and implement three child-centered programs including mentorships, supervised homework, and summer school.

The research center was established by Don and Marilyn Gevirtz, of Santa Barbara, with a $1 million gift to the Graduate School of Education.

Don Gevirtz, a former trustee of The UCSB Foundation, is a successful businessman who recently served as U. S. Ambassador to the Republic of Fiji.

His wife, Marilyn, has been a UCSB Foundation trustee for 10 years.

UCSB's Graduate School of Education prepares researchers, scholar-practitioners, and educational leaders through academic programs in a variety of educational specializations leading to the Ph.D., M.A., and California teaching credentials as well as other credentials.
